The Japanese are known for many things, however there are certain facts about the country which are little known and quite peculiar. Here are some more interesting and unusual facts about Japan.

In the medieval period, the Japanese considered all pitch-black objects to be of high beauty and value. In result, it was a custom for many Japanese to pain their teeth black using a dye. This not only made them attractive (as per the custom of the day) but the dye also helped prevent tooth decay.

In Japan, there are establishments known as lactation bars where customers can buy and consume actual human breast milk. Lactation bar customers can buy one shot of breast milk for two thousand yen (18USD), or they can get the actual nipple so to say for five thousand yen (46USD).

TokyoIn nineteen eighty six, the international community put an official and permanent ban on whaling. Since then, more than fourteen thousand whales have been killed in Japan for ‘scientific purposes; – their meat was sold at markets throughout the country.

Japan has a theme park, commonly known as adult world, where kids are taken to experience what it’s like to be an adult – there the little ones can go to work, do banking etc.

Japanese traffic police shoots offender vehicles with special paint balls. The paint is really bright and hard to remove. The idea is for vehicle to be ‘marked’ for spotting by other traffic police patrols, should the one giving chase lose the offender vehicle from site.

One of the most sacred religious shrines in Japan is torn down and then rebuilt every twenty years. The ritual is in practice for at least a millennium, and some Japanese historic records suggest the practice might be as old as two thousand years.

As per Japanese mythology and folklore, otters were considered very dangerous animals as they were able to shapeshift into a child or a beautiful woman and kill the person they came across.

In the late nineteen nineties, a Japanese man was tricked into being the star of a reality show where he had to spend fifteen months, naked in a room, in absolute solitude. He was never told that producers would air him live on national TV for the duration of the show.

Japan is a country of longevity, and Tokyo city hall officials know this. So in twenty ten, they went to visit and congratulate one of the city’s oldest people – a 111 year old man, for his birthday. What they found at his home though was his bones as the man has died thirty years ago, but his family kept it hush, so they could continue receiving his pension.
