Famous British Olympians

Here are some of Britain’s most renowned participants in Olympic Games.
Harold Maurice Abrahams was born in Bedford on the 15th of December, 1899. He is to date one of Britain’s greatest track and field athletes. The apogee of his career was during the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, when he won the gold medal at the men’s 100 metres event. He also won the silver medal at the men’s 4×100 metres relay. Harold Abrahams’s feat of winning the gold medal was depicted in the 1981 movie, Chariots of Fire, which starred Ben Cross in the role of the successful athlete.
Rebecca “Becky” Adlington, OBE is perhaps Britain’s greatest freestyle swimmer. During her career she was won a total of seven gold medals, three silver medals and seven bronze medals. Her first Olympic Games where in 2008 in Beijing. During the games she won two gold medals at the women’s 400 metres and 800 metres freestyle events. Then in 2012 when in her homeland’s capital, London she won two bronze medals at the women’s 400 and 800 metres freestyle events.
Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Shirley Robertson are three of Britain’s most successful sailors. Shirley Robertson was the first British athlete to win Olympic gold medals at two consecutive games (2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympic Games). Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb more commonly known as The Blondes in the Boat matched Robertson’s achievement when they won the Olympic gold medals at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Chris Boardman was the cyclist that jumped started Britain’s golden age of cycling. During his career he has won a total of eleven medals from different championships. His biggest success was the Olympic gold during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Four year later, during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games he won his second Olympic medal, a bronze in individual trial time event.
Lord Sebastian Coe is one Britain’s most illustrious middle-distance runners. During his career as an athlete, Coe managed to win two Olympic gold medals at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Game and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He won both in the men’s 1500 metres event.
Mohamed “Mo” Farah is a Somali-born, British runner that made history when he won the Olympic gold in the 2012 London Games for the men’s 5000 metres and 10.000 metres events.
