Moving to France – Is it Any Different to Other Removals?

France is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. France as a state, way of life, mentality of people, customs and traditions etc. is much different than the common idea most people build in their mind based on films, pop culture, books etc. Nevertheless, a large number of individuals have decided to move to France and make the most of it. Some have been successful, others not so much.

If you are in the process of deciding whether or not to move to France (from the UK for instance) it is crucial to sit down, think it through and be clear about your stance on the matter. Moving away from the usual technicalities of which man and van removal company to use (although choosing the right man and van service for the job is essential) there are a bunch of other considerations.

France-ParisFirst and foremost – are you willing to go through with it all? If you are hesitant or your gut feeling is telling you think it over, then perhaps it is best to go back to the drawing board.

Location – the place you chose to live in should have all the necessary facilities and amenities. Moving with children obviously is a much more complex task than moving on your own or with your partner only. Try and research your selected destination as much as possible in advance of moving there.

Living costs – living in another country might look more affordable, but in reality day to day living costs could be a real burden. Consider the town or city where you are moving – will you be able to pay the rent, to pay for healthcare, transport, local taxes etc. Much of this information is readily available on the internet so do some research.

Life in France – life in France is much different to living in other places in Europe and the world. The French like their everyday living laidback, and at their own pace. Even in large cities, gears might not switch as fast as you are used to so take that into consideration.

A general piece of advice for all people moving to France – French people and their way of life is based on knowing or at least being familiar with their customs and nature. Foreigners who have lived in France for many years say that immersing oneself in French culture and way of life as much as possible is the only way to understand and be understood. Language skills are absolutely crucial in this case. Living in France is much more interesting and involving than meets the eye so one must be ready to embrace and absorb it.

Nota Benne – if looking to buy or rent residential property in France, by no means do this alone. Use the services of a specialised property agent who knows their stuff. It would be best to shortlist companies which have offices or reps in both your country and in France, and choose a bilingual estate agent – this is of utmost importance.
