Japan – Unusual Facts Part 1

Posted by in Guides, on April 5, 2015

Japan is country of wisdom, tradition, extremes and some unusual facts which people might find rather interesting. Here are some of them:

Along certain portions of the Japanese coastline, there were six hundred year old monoliths warning people not to build their houses any closer to the sea. With time, the warning got ignored and disregarded. People began building their homes beyond the monoliths and eventually the twenty eleven tsunami which hit Japan washed the houses away.

On the Yucca Mountain National Nuclear Repository Facility, there is an inscription which is meant to last at least ten thousand years. The inscription warns future generations of the danger which the mountain contains. Very pragmatic indeed.

Japanese trains are arguably the most punctual in the world. If a Japanese train is more than five minutes late, passengers receive a formal apology, and in many cases a delay certificate to show their boss or wife. If a Japanese train is more than an hour late, it is shown on national news.

Three quarters of Japanese homes are fitted with so called hi-tech toilets. The more advanced versions eliminate the need for toilet paper, they keep users warm, check their blood pressure etc. Some of the toilets play running water sounds for more privacy and close and open themselves so users don’t have to touch anything.

Before WWII Japan and the US were best of buds, as a sign of friendship between the two countries, Japan sent three thousand Pink Cherry seeds as a gift to the US, these were planted near the Potomac River. It is the same pink cherries that grow in Washington DC today.

A Japanese indoor vegetable factory is able to produce ten thousand heads of lettuce per day yet it uses only one percent of the water needed to grow the same amount of lettuce in the outdoors. Talking about Japanese efficiency.

A small village in Japan, invented the practice of so called rice paddy art. This involves four different strains of rice, planted on specific patterns so that rice forms pictures on the paddies once matured. Similar to corn circles but with rice.

Japan-mapJapan implements a lifetime employment policy. Meaning, large companies employ new staff right after they finish high school and keep them employed until retirement. Staff is picked for their general potential, not due to any set of specific skills they might have.

City of Tokyo has its own superhero. He calls himself Mangetsu Man. His identity is kept secret through a rather unusual superhero outfit, his mask being a yellow smiley face. Mangetsu Man’s self-delegated tasks are to keep the city rubbish-free.

If you are not planning to move to Japan anytime soon, but are looking to relocate your household or office within your home city or home country, then by all means secure specialised moving services. A professionally organised house or office moving service will make all the difference and save you a decent amount of time, effort and resources from dealing with the removal on your own.
